Caption: This image is part QuickBird2 very high resolution image of the Halley Bay emperor penguin colony at Windy Creek on the Brunt Ice Shelf, one of the largest emperor penguin colonies in the world. The brown areas on the image are penguin guano, while the black areas represent the penguins themselves. This is one of the images used in the landmark survey to count the total population of emperor penguins from space. The brown staining was used to identify the locations of emperor colonies and, once found, the areas of the penguin huddles was calculated to estimate the population of each breeding colony.
