Caption: The Microtron is an experiment designed to predict the effects of climate warming on feeding rates in Antarctic microbial food webs. It uses thermostatically controlled chillers to pump coolant fluid through a series of water baths which are held at different temperatures. It also allows ultraviolet radiation to be controlled, to predict the effects of the 'ozone hole' on microbial food webs. Microcosms (i.e. glass jars) contain mixtures of different bacteria and protozoa (unicellular animals).
