Caption: View of Mt Murphy, Marie Byrd Land, Antarctica, taken from Turtle Rock (5 km west). In the foreground are scientists and helicopters from the German research vessel RV Polarstern, which visited the Amundsen Sea Embayment in February-April 2006. Turtle Rock is composed of hyaloclastite breccias overlain by basaltic lavas of 4.7 Ma age. A scattering of erratic boulders (granite and gneiss) lies on the bedrock surface. In the distance is ‘Notebook Cliffs’ (informal name), a 9 Ma-old sequence 800 m high composed of multiple volcanic units that were completely overridden by a very thick ice sheet, probably in Pliocene times.
