Caption: Iain Staniland (seal biologist) and Mark Jessop (seal assistant) paint mark a female fur seal from the raised gantry at the Special Study Beach (SSB) on Bird Island, South Georgia. The paint mark allows newly arrived female seals to be distinguished and counted. The population of seals on this beach are intensely studied each year to monitor their breeding biology and numbers.
