Caption: Parhelia over a camp site on the Evans Ice Stream In winds approaching gale force, ice crystals are picked up from the surface of the ice sheet and blown above head-height. On this day the skies above the blowing snow were cloudless. The light from the sun was refracted by the ice crystals to form parhelia, or sun-dogs. These winds heralded a week-long storm which this scientist sat out in his tent.
