Caption: Emperor Penguin Colony with Sunset. These penguins are probably incubating eggs on their feet, which are covered by folds of skin. This shot was almost certainly taken as the sun was going down for winter. During these months of darkness the males incubate continuously and are relieved by the females after the chicks hatch. Emperor penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) breed at high latitudes on sea ice during the Antarctic winter.
